“Father if it be possible let this cup pass from Me”

Intro. What meaning of passage? Many view as Christ pleading not to die. Using circumstantial evidence and statements made beforehand as a lawyer would in court we will try the case and reach a verdict.

UNLOCK PASSAGE

Interpret the words what saying mean question: did Christ show ignorance whether possible or not possible? Are the words of one ignorant: for the addition of word IF, is indicative of doubt!

Can we learn the aim of the speaker, the cause and the occasion?

Were these words spoken by unspeakable Wisdom-who knew the Father as the Father knew the Son? How could He then be ignorant? “For as the Father knoweth Me; even I know the Father.”

Did not the prophets appear not to have been ignorant, but to have known clearly, and to have declared before hand with much assurance that His death MUST come to pass?

  1. Prophets knew the death, cause of the death, and were affected by the death, burial, and resurrection, ascension. They described the betrayal, trial with minute accuracy.was it not He that inspired them to write?

  2. What about “Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from Me”. Is He ignorant of His outcome?

  3. When Peter ask Him this, Matt 16:22, He severely chastised him: “get thee behind Me Satan” immediately before this, He had called Peter “blessed”.

  4. Did He not call a man a “hireling” who refused to give his life for the sheep? Was it not the sign of THE shepherd to “give His life for the sheep?

  5. “for this cause does My Father love, because I lay down My life that I may take it again”.

  6. About the hour of crucification did He not say: “Father, glorify Me”?

Blessings of the cross destroyed enmity of God towards man

Brought about reconciliation between God and man

Made the Earth Heaven

Pulled down the gates of Hell, destroyed the power of

Satan

Destroyed the power of sin, expelled the Demons

Destroyed temples, overturned altars, suppressed the

Sacrifical offerings, founded the Church

Cross is brighter than the Sun, more brilliant that a sunbeam in a dark heart of woe, extinguishes darkness. Breaks our bond, makes the prison of death ineffective

A demonstration of the “love of God”. “for the Jews seek a sign and the Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ, crucified.”

SO GREAT THE BLESSINGS OF THE CROSS AND HE DESIRED NOT TO DIE?

IF He did not desire the cross, who made Him die? He is God!! Why did He send the prophets before, telling if He did not wish the cross?

CUP a word of one who signifies the desire which one has for a certain act

Cup is sweet to those who are thirsty—so crucifixion to Him

What mean: “with desire have I desired to eat this Passover with You”? That

Evening, the cross awaited Him

John 12:23-36

John 17 The prayer in the Garden was it for Him, about Him, or the disciples?

What does it mean: “Father, the hour is come”

“glorify thy Son”

“may the Son glorify Thee”

“I have finished the work which Thou gavest Me do”

“I pray for them” vs 9

Hebrews 12: 1-3

Miracles had not made Jesus different, great among all men who had lived,

Other men had worked miracles.

Dieing not make Christ remembered, sacrificing Himself would, for that He

Demands to be remembered

Not sinning would make our Lord beyond the pale of humanity,

Sinless dieing for the sinner would-His blood is the agent of washing

All sinners must meet

There is nothing holy about dieing, suffering, temptation----these coupled with resurrecting made Christ unmistakably the ONLY SON OF GOD!!

Jesus desired this CUP
